Thievery Prints

from $15.00

Thievery is a triptych illustration narrating the suppression of pre-colonial practices and beliefs of the Bisayan people of The Phillippines. The character on the left panel depicts Saragnayan, the god of darkness, prodding through a clouded entity; and on the right panel is Nagmalitong Yawa Sinagmaling, the goddess of empowerment, entrapped by the entity. The middle pane is symbolic of the historical and cultural erasure of my people post colonization. Our knowledge of the indigenous and their practice isn't widely known to many modern day filipinos. This illustration is a reminder of the necessity to re-bridge the connection between our ancestors to honor them and the stories that we were never told. The gold scripture is a phrase known in Bisaya describing the strength in blood and the inherent link to the people who walked the earth before we came around; "Isug Ug Dugo" translates to "Brave Blood"
